japweed(strangleweed) The common name for the brown seaweed Sargassum muticum; the seaweed originated in Japan but has become established on the coasts of Europe and North America. It is regarded as a pest, fouling boat propellers and fishing nets and disturbing the natural balance of the indigenous marine flora and fauna.
